Trying Cannabis for the First Time? Here’s What You Need to Know

The first tequila shot is the hardest, as they say. Indeed. Even if cannabis is the most common and legally acceptable psychoactive substance in the world, it’s still nerve-wracking to try it, especially for the first time.

If you’ve just recently stepped on that legal age and cannabis consumption piques your curiosity? We’re excited for you! You’re about to embark on a recreational journey that’s safe and (mostly) legal. And because we want your cannabis experience to be a positive one, here’s a solid quick guide on what to expect and some tips to inspire a comfortable high session.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is a plant where parts of it like flowers, seeds, stems, and leaves are shredded, extracted, and used for various production of cannabis-derived products.

Traditionally, hemp (a type of cannabis) is utilized for the production of textiles and rope. Now, hemp is better known to be a base source of joints, vape distillates, edibles, tinctures, and more.

What is the cannabis consumption experience like?

The effects of cannabis (across its variety of forms) are not the same for everyone. But it’s a known fact that cannabis can induce some changes in your sleeping patterns, cognitive functions, mood, appetite, and sometimes, physicality (like getting red eyes for example).

Here are some of the commons effects reported by individuals across different ages:

  • Heightened senses (for example, colors can seem brighter)
  • Relaxed state of being
  • Energized
  • Hungry
  • Others

Experts say these effects may peak within minutes or half an hour after consuming a form of cannabis product. The onset of effects and how they’ll last depends on several factors such as the unique biochemistry of the individual, dosage, frequency of use, and the method of cannabis consumption (oral, sublingual, or through inhalation).

What Are the Different Ways of Consuming Cannabis?

Smoking or vaping joints and vape distillates

One of the most common ways of cannabis encounter is by smoking and vaping cannabis. Smoking cannabis is pretty standard. You either smoke cannabis-dried flowers rolled to form a joint or dab concentrates using a bong (a cannabis smoking apparatus where a pipe is attached to a water-filled bowl, heated by a lighter, or any form of burner).

Believe it or not. The cannabis hype also reached the vaping world. Vape pens, cartridges, disposables, and more use cannabis distillate to form a cannabis-filled vapor. Some folks swear vaporized cannabis is better because cannabis compounds are simply heated up, NOT burned.

Smoking and inhaling vaporized cannabis are some of the easiest ways to fast-track the effects of cannabis in your system.

Eating edibles

If you’re seeing cookies or chocolate bars that seem to have no business just casually laying on an adult party, they might be edibles.

In shelves, edibles are snacks in bright and bold packaging infused with cannabis compounds like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidiol). They can be candies, cookies, gummy bears, or even jerky.

Unlike other forms of cannabis consumption methods, edibles have the slowest onset time of effects. But don’t underestimate them. Effects taken from edibles last longer. You might still feel the effects peaking after hours.

It’s recommended to start with a low dose of about 1-5mg of THC. If you’re being offered a cookie laden with cannabis, you might want to take a teeny tiny bite first before consuming the whole thing to gauge its effects on you.

Sublingually consuming oils or tinctures

Tinctures are alcoholic extracts infused with cannabis compounds. They are not to be mistaken with cannabis oils which mostly involve using MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) or any edible form of oil in the formula.

Both formulas are usually contained in amber-colored bottles with a dropper. The route of administration can be oral or sublingual. Through the sublingual method, the user will drop drops of the product under the tongue and wait for minutes until the formula is absorbed.

Because the sublingual method lets the compounds go straight to the bloodstream, users may feel the effects as early as about 15 minutes, lasting for at least an hour.

Applying topicals

Yes, there are lotions, creams, salves, and even lip balms that include cannabis in their ingredient list. Because of the nature of topicals, these products are good for localized skin needs. For example, a cold cannabis-infused cream can be applied to an area where pain persists. The anti-pain relieving properties of the product permeate the skin reaching the nerves for soothing relief.

To clear the air, you can’t get high from applying cannabis topicals. Cannabis compounds from topicals can’t permeate the skin deep enough to reach the bloodstream.

Preparations Before Your First Cannabis Session

Directed towards types of cannabis products that invade your internal body (that includes smoking, vaporizing, oral, and sublingual), there are certain things you can do to make sure your first cannabis experience is safe and comfortable.

Make a comfortable setting

Yes, exactly what you’re thinking – a couch situated in front of a television playing FRIENDS. But more than setting up a trippy sala, you want an environment where everything that makes you feel secure is close at hand – a pillow, plushie, blanket, your phone, and/or a glass of water perhaps.

Others like to explore the great outdoors while high but as a beginner, you might want to put this off first.

Prep a mindset

Cannabis may heighten emotions. A giddy feeling can quickly turn into feelings of happiness, sometimes euphoria. It may also make your fears seem a tad more exaggerated.

So be ready.

Expect both positive and negative emotions to flow through you during a session. Above all, set your mind to think that this experience will soon pass – enjoy it or simply relax through the whole ordeal.

It’s also comforting to know that cannabis is inherently safe. So far, there are no credible reports made on a cannabis fatal overdose.

Don’t panic, it’s organic.
